Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion – What Is It?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that involves gently exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin with a specialized exfoliating device. By doing so, dead skin cells are removed, helping to rejuvenate and refresh the skin’s surface. Microdermabrasion is a comfortable and relatively quick skin rejuvenating treatment that does not cause any discomfort or pain. Microdermabrasion is a great way to resurface skin for individuals with acne, acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, sun damage, or other conditions that lead to uneven skin tone or texture.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a fantastic non-invasive cosmetic option that helps to rejuvenate the surface of your skin and promote skin cell regeneration. While many of our clients use microdermabrasion as a facial procedure, the procedure can, in fact, be used on all parts of the body and is popular for treating uneven skin tone on the face, neck, back, chest, and hands.
There are many benefits to using microdermabrasion, and the treatment is well tolerated by most skin types, even by those with skin sensitivities. Some of the benefits of microdermabrasion include:
- Improved Skin Texture: By exfoliating the surface of the skin and removing dead skin cells, your skin becomes smoother and softer, benefiting from a reduction in rough patches and unevenness.
- More Even Skin Tone: With microdermabrasion, a brighter and more radiant complexion is achieved with a more even skin tone overall by reducing sun and age spots.
- Minimize Fine Lines & Wrinkles: The gentle abrading action of microdermabrasion helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving you with a more youthful appearance.
- Reduced Pore Size: Microdermabrasion also helps to unclog pores and remove debris from the surface of the skin, making pores appear smaller.
- Improved Product Absorption: Microdermabrasion can be helpful as a pretreatment for other procedures, promoting product absorption and helping skincare products penetrate the skin more effectively.
- Diminished Acne Scars: Many clients with acne scars, resulting from teenage or adult acne, opt for regular microdermabrasion treatments to help reduce the appearance of mild scarring.
- Gentle and Non-Invasive: Microdermabrasion is a gentle and non-invasive treatment that takes relatively little time to complete. Appointments range from 20 to 60 minutes, with facial appointments averaging approximately 30 minutes. A great procedure for those with a busy schedule or to fit in on a lunch break.
- Suitable for Various Skin Types: Microdermabrasion is generally well-tolerated by most skin types, including those with sensitive skin.
How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Microdermabrasion utilizes one of two exfoliating tools that use an abrasive medium to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This can be accomplished through Diamond Microdermabrasion or Crystal Microdermabrasion. The difference between the two is the method by which dead skin cells are removed.
What is Diamond Microdermabrasion?
Diamond Microdermabrasion uses a wand with a diamond-infused disc to gently exfoliate the skin to be treated. The action is much like a rotary sanding tool, but with a much gentler and less aggressive effect. The tool itself loosens the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin while simultaneously applying vacuum pressure to remove the skin cells from the area being treated.
What is Crystal Microdermabrasion?
Crystal Microdermabrasion utilizes a small tool that blasts small crystals at the surface of your skin. The abrasive crystals serve to loosen dead skin cells, which are then removed from the skin’s surface, along with the used-up crystal medium, by an integrated vacuum system. Crystal Microdermabrasion can be viewed as a gentle sand-blasting procedure for the skin.
Addressing Different Skin Types
Everyone’s skin is different and may require special attention. Microdermabrasion can be adjusted based on skin type and sensitivity, employing different media pads or intensities, making it a versatile procedure that can be applied to different areas of the body.
Microdermabrasion Safety
While microdermabrasion is a painless and relatively comfortable procedure, your health and wellness are always a priority at RevIV Health & Wellness. All of our technicians are trained to administer microdermabrasion in the safest manner possible, recognizing differing skin types and adjusting microdermabrasion tools to achieve beautiful and glowing skin results.
Following a microdermabrasion procedure, patients may experience slight sensitivities to the exfoliated skin, particularly in direct sunlight. Our clinicians at RevIV Health & Wellness always recommend the application of sunscreen following a microdermabrasion procedure, as removal of the outermost skin layer makes the skin more susceptible to sunburn.
Although microdermabrasion is relatively non-invasive, it may not be suitable for all patients. Patients experiencing acne breakouts, rosacea flare-ups, psoriasis, or eczema in the desired treatment area may be asked to reschedule their appointment or avoid treating the area to prevent any unwanted discomfort. The physicians at RevIV Health & Wellness take every patient’s safety to heart and will always provide the right recommendations and guidance to achieve the safest and best results.
What Conditions Does Microdermabrasion Treat?
Microdermabrasion is one of the best non-invasive procedures to achieve a brightened skin tone and a more youthful glow. For those with current or previous skin conditions, microdermabrasion can help to minimize the appearance of scars, age spots, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, and more. The use of microdermabrasion can also be a great way to prepare the skin for alternative treatments or in preparation for skincare applications.
